This retreat is perfect for the passionate creative and those interested in colour, art licensing and surface pattern design. Rachael & Georgie wanted to create a course that would help inspire any creative, at any level of expertise, to take their artwork into another dimension, without needing complex software to get started!
Rachael and Georgie will guide you in discovering your unique artistic style, learning about key pattern design techniques by experimenting with Winsor & Newton Watercolours, playing with acrylic paint pens, choosing colour palettes, mastering the fundamentals of motif development, balance and contrast when creating patterns, pattern placement, print layout and hand creating repeat patterns. You will be given an introduction in how to capture and digitize your artwork, exploring and unlocking new possibilities for your designs.
Rachael and Georgie love inspiring passionate creatives to explore the wonderful world of surface pattern design. Unleash your creativity in a friendly and supportive environment suitable for all experience levels, especially beginners. The retreat will be a great opportunity to learn from two experienced artists and also connect with fellow art enthusiasts.
We are excited to announce that we have a wonderful line up of guest speakers for this Art Retreat, including the Gold Coast local, Ellie Whittaker an illustrator and Surface Pattern designer who's has worked with some of Australia's biggest retailers, including Target and Cotton On and gained widespread repute with licensed 'Ellie Whittaker' ranges for Streets Ice Cream, Big W, Best&Less and Spotlight Stores.
Where & When: The QT Hotel, Surfers Paradise, Gold Coast from Friday 14th to Saturday 15th June
Retreat Timing: Workshops doors open each day from 8:45am for a 9am sharp start, then finish at 4pm each day. Morning tea & Lunch are provided both days along with all day coffee & tea making facilities in the Workshop room. Rachael and Georgie welcome all the Retreat attendees to a celebratory drink & nibbles on Friday night of the retreat.

What's included in your Art Retreat ticket?
- All art supplies – All materials required for workshops are included in your retreat fee, though you are very welcome to BYO your favourite art supplies as well!

- Understanding the foundations of the elements and principles of design, and how to apply them to patterns
- Intro to using Winsor & Newston Watercolours and other art supplies products that we use/recommend
- Watercolour sessions with directed guidance and tuition from Rachael & Georgie
- Working towards creating repeatable designs using your watercolour artworks
- How to capture your artworks professionally for digitising (photos & scanning)
- Turning your watercolour artworks into a repeatable pattern design that can be showcased on products (fabric, stationary: using print-on-demand sites for example)
- Demonstrations of artwork pattern repeats (using various
programs) from beginner level to intermediate - How to prepare your artwork/patterns for a range of different products
- Advice on launching your artwork into the world of surface pattern design
- Inspiration for how to apply your own surface designs to textiles, homeware and stationery

Art Retreat Q&A's
Cancellation is allowed up to 14 days before the Retreat starts. If you cancel within the 14 days leading up to the retreat, we cannot refund your ticket due to costs already paid for the event. However, if we (or you) manage to find someone from the waiting list to take your spot, we will be happy to refund you the ticket price. You would also be welcome to find a replacement to fill your spot for the retreat if you can't make it and arrange with us the change on the ticket name.
GOLD COAST: QT Hotel, 7 Staghorn Ave, Surfers Paradise QLD 4217. If you plan to stay at the QT for the duration of the Art Retreat, the QT Hotel has discounted rates for Retreat attendees. The discount code will be provided after ticket is booked.
Travelling from the Gold Coast Airport
Travel to and from the Gold Coast is convenient, with multiple options from flying to train/tram, car hire, or shuttle/taxi (for larger groups).
The Gold Coast is serviced by the Gold Coast Airport (see map, airport code OOL), with frequent domestic (Qantas, Virgin, Jetstar) and some international flights (e.g. Air New Zealand/Singapore Air), making it accessible from various locations.
The 777 bus runs seven days a week from the Gold Coast Airport to Broadbeach South (G:link) station. From here you can easily transfer to the G:link Gold Coast Light Rail Network .
Con-x-ion shuttle busses and hotel transfer busses are available to major locations including hotels (see hotel websites for details of transfer busses).
Alternatively Taxis & Uber also operates from the Gold Coast Airport.
Dining
There are restaurants inside the QT Hotel but if you wanted to venture out, the Gold Coast is a gourmet delight with many restaurants and cafés to explore. It is impossible to signpost even a fraction of the many amazing restaurants and culinary variation available (but if you like Japanese you may be in heaven). Most hotels have excellent restaurants (we recommend you consult review sites like Google and TripAdvisor).
TripAdvisor lists its 'top ten restaurants' and provides rankings in different categories, and the Australian Good Food Guide has an enormous list of restaurants on the Gold Coast.

Undercover parking at the QT is available at $30 per day. There is ample parking onsite for those driving to the retreat.
Yes of course you can! We will be supplying you with ALL the creative tools you will need for the Art Retreat however you are most welcome to bring your favourite art supplies along.
Delicious morning tea & lunch as well as coffee & tea making facilities are provided over both retreat days. After the Friday workshop finishes at 4pm, please join us in the restaurant complimentary drink from 5pm.
Our retreat is open to any creative, at any level! Suitable for beginners, as well as those with some surface pattern design experience.
